Why Disney Princesses Need Some Help (Continued)

For today's review I watched The Little Mermaid, this is one of my favorite Disney movies. It is so cute and I love it, it still holds some magic even though I'm an adolescent. I did have quite a few issues with the characters of this show though, they had some problems that I wanted to address.

The Little Mermaid:
-Her father is VERY temperamental, he didn't even give Ariel the chance to explain when he called upon her to inquire about her lateness.
-Flounder has no personality at all, he's just the helpless little yellow fish with an annoying habit of following Ariel everywhere.
-Sebastian has no sense of patience, I do not have this quality myself but I find it pertinent to point out. He acts as if Ariel is two and can't take care of herself.
-Ariel doesn't do anything when her father finds her treasures, all she does is cry "No, daddy!" and doesn't even try to protect her beloved statue from her dad.
-Ariel has a petty crush and acts as if the world revolves around Eric. She has only seen him and heard him talking to the sailors and Grim. When she runs away to Ursula she has no idea if Eric is going to accept her.
-Ursula has to be my favorite character in this movie. She is malicious, evil and persuasive. She does have a prominent fault, however, she fails to keep the seashell that contains Ariel's voice in a safe place. Why would she keep it around her neck? The movie fails to describe any reason why she must place it there and if she doesn't need it there couldn't she have kept it in her room where it would be safe from potential damage?
-Eric should have kissed Ariel when they returned to the surface after the eels pushed over their boat, it would have been the perfect time. This would have ended the movie and their would have been very little drama but it still would have been the sensible thing to do.
-Eric has so little personality, all we know of him is that he's the Prince and he needs to get married soon. We sort of know that he's strong and brave from when he saved his dog from the fire but these are the only characteristics of the esteemed Prince Eric.

A little note I must add here is the obvious romantic relationship between the cook and maid, this was so cute and I love the flirting they do through out the movie.
I have had a few requests for other movies to review, these are Aladdin and Sleeping Beauty. These are the only others I am going to do unless you have any other requests. Thanks for suffering through my ramblings and just to let you know, I have enjoyed doing this! I might have other mini series in the future so be sure to keep coming for more little tidbits of joy.

  1. Love it! Now you need Pochahontas. And Beauty and the Beast. Oh and Mulan too. And/or Mulan 2
